Structured output
Structured output forces a model's final answer into a shape a schema defines, a JSON object with named, typed fields, instead of a sentence a person or a script has to parse and interpret. What downstream code receives is guaranteed to have the fields it expects, not a plausible paragraph that says the same thing a different way on every run.
Any downstream system that consumes an agent's answer directly, a case management tool, a ledger, a reporting pipeline, needs a value it can read as data, not text it has to interpret before it can act on it.
A triage agent returns a category, a priority and a short summary as named fields, instead of a paragraph a separate script would have to read and guess the same three values out of.
In Dynamiq, set a response format JSON schema on an agent node and its inference mode switches automatically to one that can guarantee schema-conformant JSON. If the model's answer does not validate against the schema, the agent appends a correction instruction and retries before the run ends, rather than returning something that fails downstream instead.
