An AI agent is more than a chatbot that answers one prompt. It runs a loop: reason about what to do next, take an action such as calling a tool, observe the result, and repeat until it has a final answer. That loop is what lets it look something up, take an action in another system, and adjust its plan based on what it finds, instead of only producing a single response from a single input.

What an agent can actually do is defined by the tools it is given, not by the model underneath it. That is exactly the question a regulated enterprise needs answered before it approves one: which systems can this agent read from, which can it write to, and who reviews its decisions.

An agent that reads an insurance claim, checks it against policy in a knowledge base, and drafts a decision for a person to approve is doing agent work. A single-turn chatbot answering a policy question is not.

**In Dynamiq**, an agent is one node: a model, a role, a set of tools and, optionally, memory, running in a configurable loop with a maximum number of steps. The same agent is available on the visual canvas and in the open source Python SDK, one engine either way, and every run is traced from the first thought to the final answer.
