Agentic AI describes systems that act, not just answer. Given a goal, an agentic system breaks it into steps, chooses tools such as a database query, a search or an API call, observes what comes back, and decides what to do next until the goal is met or it needs a person. Generative AI produces content from a prompt; agentic AI puts that same model inside a loop that takes actions. An AI agent is one such system, and agentic AI is the broader approach, which can include several agents working in one workflow.

The distinction matters most where actions have consequences. A drafted reply can be wrong without harm; an agent that updates an account, files a report or moves money needs limits on what it can reach, checks on what it produces, and a person at the points where a mistake is expensive. Agentic AI moves the governance question from what the model says to what the system does.

A customer asks to move a card payment date. An agentic system looks up the account, checks the policy for allowed dates, makes the change through the card system's API and confirms it, handing off to a person if the request falls outside policy.
